“A truly impressive game”: Dorian Rogozenco sheds light on the Nezhmetdinov-Chernikov game (1962)

The game between Rashid Nezhmetdinov and Oleg Chernikov (Rostov-on-Don, 1962) followed in the footsteps of the one played a year earlier between Fischer-Reshevsky, right up to the 11th move in a Dragon Accéléré Sicilienne:
Fischer here settled for a quick draw after 12.♕g4 d6 13.♕d1 ♞c6 14.♕d3 b6.
Nezhmetdinov considered the position of the diagram and came up with a diabolical idea: 12.♕xf6! For the ♕, White gets only two pieces after 12…♞e2+ 13.♘xe2 exf6 14.♘c3 ♜e8 15.♘d5. But thanks to their much better piece play and control over the black squares, they will succeed in mounting a strong attack on the ♚: afterwards. 15…♜e6 16.♗d4 ♚g7 17.♖ad1it’s clear that Black has big problems developing his Wing-♛. White, on the other hand, has free play against the ♚, and won this game in 33 moves!
Nezhmetdinov’s sacrifice has been the subject of much discussion and has often been questioned. He himself has always maintained his idea, and if we examine the variant today with the most modern software, we find that they consider this sacrifice to be perfectly playable!
