In this video course, GM Surya Ganguly joins IM Sagar Shah and, drawing on his colossal experience, shares some unusual endgame wisdom. The material mainly presents positions with ♖ vs ♜♟, and begins by covering the fundamentals: Lucena, Philidor and Vancura, then quickly enters non-trivial territory likely to challenge even the masters: the theoretical nuances in managing doubled ♟♟ and ♟♟ on the f and h columns.

Surya presents some ingenious “rules of thumb” for tackling these knotty endings, while stressing the importance of real calculation and understanding, so as not to fall into a crude reductionist trap. In this course, he promises something no instructor would normally promise: uncertainty! His aim is not to know everything – which is a chimera that can only come from naivety – but to realize that we never know enough and, consequently, to be cautiously comfortable with the uncertainty that this awareness allows.

To help you evaluate and complete your understanding of the concepts covered in the first volume, the second opus deals with positions, many of which come from high-level GM games. Thus, around 70% of the material discussed here is the application of previously established ideas, and the remainder includes rich examples that do not refer directly to a known rule. True to his philosophy that understanding and confusion are two sides of the same coin, Surya reminds us of the importance of remaining vigilant and warns against the dangers of using theory as a crutch.
