About Freestyle Chess
The contractor Jan Henric Buettner and world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen founded Freestyle 2024. Freestyle is a chess game with a special feature: the placement of the pieces on the last row is randomized before the game. This eliminates the need for traditional chess opening theory, making each game new from the start. Players navigate uncharted territory from the very first move.
After the inaugural WEISSENHAUS Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge in February 2024, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour will kick off in February 2025 with the first of five tournaments:
- Weissenhaus/Germany (February 07-14),
- Paris/France (April 08-15),
- New York/USA (July 17-24),
- New Delhi/India (September 17-24),
- Cape Town/South Africa (December 05-12).
