The subject of the article is the new idea 13.c5+! in the famous Variatiane Panov after 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4 ♞f6 5.♘c3 ♞c6 6.♘f3 ♝g4 7.cxd5 ♞xd5 8.♕b3 ♝xf3 9.gxf3 e6 10.♕xb7 ♞xd4 11.♗b5+ ♞xb5 12.♕c6+ ♚e7.

Black has several options to choose from, depending on whether he wants to try to keep the extra material or not. Robert Ris analyzes the continuations:

  • A) 13…f6
  • B) 13…d6
  • C) 13…e8
  • D) 13…d6.

Ris: “The piece sacrifice 13.♕c5+ potentially leads to some incredibly sharp and fun-to-play positions for White and are certainly more exciting than the famous endgame line in the Panov variant of the Caro-Kann. However, as in almost all openings these days, with accurate play Black does well, objectively speaking, in more than one line. Nevertheless, in a practical game, I’d take White. From my own experience and assessment of GMs’ play, it’s fair to say that Black is the one who has to be very careful not to make any missteps in this minefield.”
