04/12/2024 – Ding Liren’s success with White has been decidedly average so far in this World Championship. Thinking he had surprised his opponent with the Englishwoman, it was he who immediately found himself struggling to stabilize the position. He managed to do so, however (move 19), but by investing an enormous amount of time. It was then that he fell into a diabolical trap (22nd move) set by Gukesh. The Indian now had the upper hand, with plenty of time to spare. But, wanting to put pressure on his opponent, he made a quick decision (26th move). Finally, after many more inaccuracies due to the complexity of the position and the lack of time for both players, but also to emotional tension and accumulated fatigue, the draw was signed on the 51st move, not without Gukesh having once again previously refused to repeat the moves.
