“At the end of the day, a match is a match. And it’s a match between two players. When a player starts to gain momentum, the opponent’s reaction depends on his experience and how he handles the situation at that moment,” said Ding, stressing that match play and tournament play “are two different things”.

Asked about his preparation for Singapore, the reigning champion clarified that he was concentrating more on mid-game, an area in which his opponent excels. “I’m more cautious in the middle game, as Gukesh is strong in strategy and understanding positions in this area,” explained Ding.

While noting that he and Gukesh are not close and so he doesn’t know much about him, the Chinese said he expects to “get to know him better as the match goes on”. Nevertheless, he praised the maturity shown by the 18-year-old Indian on the chessboard. “He’s good at strategic understanding… Despite his young age, Ii plays like an experienced player.”

Ding was also asked to share his thoughts on the rise of the younger generation in chess. “They play without the restrictions or dogmas of the previous generation,” he replied, noting that they constantly play to take the initiative and are more creative in preparing openings.

On a personal level, Ding said his life had remained virtually unchanged since becoming World Champion in 2023, although he admitted to a dip in form professionally. “My career may have taken a turn for the worse, but I think there will be a turning point soon,” he added.

During the second half of 2023, Ding took a break, partly to deal with mental health issues. Despite his poor performance in Budapest, he said that taking part in the Olympics had helped him to focus again on the world championship.

“My current state is neither exceptionally good nor bad, but I’m definitely past the worst moments of the past year and a half. I know I’ve played some great games, but I haven’t been able to convert some positions. I still believe I can turn things around, maybe during the game.”

As for the site, Ding seemed at ease. Although he had never been to Singapore, he said he was “not worried” about the facilities and had already tasted the local cuisine, which he enjoyed.
