The World Chess Championship could have been revived again on Thursday, but Ding Liren never seized the opportunities. While he had several opportunities to secure a winning position, the Chinese player ended up conceding a draw in the eighth game of the World Chess Championship against Ian Nepomniachtchi.
By sacrificing a piece to attack his opponent’s king, Ding had caught Nepo unawares and pushed him to the foul. In a favorable position, the world No. 3 was unable to conclude the game and made a series of poor decisions. Worse still, the Chinese player could have lost the game as Nepo regained his confidence with each passing shot. However, Ding was able to find a few solid shots to end up with a draw.
With this result, Ian Nepomniachtchi remains in the lead (4.5-3.5). The ninth game of the 17th World Chess Championship takes place on Friday.
