08/21/2024 – From August 15 to 24 (with a rest day on the 20th), the Georgian capital will host the first of six tournaments in which 20 of the world’s top female players will compete, shaping the future of women’s chess. The Tbilisi tournament takes place at the Biltmore Tbilisi Hotel, Georgia’s first glass skyscraper and the highest hotel in the Caucasus region. This inaugural event boasts a strong field, including two former world champions – Alexandra Kosteniuk and Mariya Muzychuk – as well as some of the most promising players. The WGP 2024/25 series introduces several key changes, including an increase in the number of participants from 16 to 20, an expansion from four to six tournaments and a larger prize pool, now amounting to €120,000. Each participant will play in three of the six tournaments, earning points according to her ranking in each tournament. The top two players in the series will earn a place in the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament. | Follow live with comments Photo: Anna Shtourman (FIDE).
